Beginning in May 2004, the Forum will provide a space for reflection in relation to the main cultural and social conflicts that humanity is faced with at the outset of the 21st century. It will be organised around three main themes: cultural diversity, sustainable development, and conditions for peace.

The city has been preparing itself for the event since 1999. A 300,000 square meter site on the city’s shoreline has been redeveloped and includes a Convention Centre with capacity for 15,000 people as well as exhibition areas, a new Marina, parks and beaches.

Events connected with the Forum will also be held throughout the city with exhibitions in different museums, performances and festivals, with even the Tour de France and the Athens 2004 Olympic Torch scheduled to pass through.

As well as the exhibitions and performing arts there will be activities that focus on debate and reflection, under the symbolic heading of “Forum Dialogues”. The Dialogues aim to be different from conventional conferences and will be structured in a series of sessions, lasting anywhere from one to seven days each with participation not being limited to intellectuals, academics and scientists.
